According to daily Ohio newspaper The Columbus Dispatch, designer watches for men are increasingly becoming an in-demand fashion accessory.

A sudden, recent increase in the number of fashion designers creating statement-making timepieces for men has renewed interest in this accessory, with various high-end designers creating innovative new watch designs that not only fulfil a practical function, but a subtle stylish one, too.

At New York Fashion Week 2012, many of the male models walking the catwalk were wearing watches.

One male California-based watch fanatic, Tim Paulsen, owns 72 valuable timepieces and citing their ability to act “like a purse” for men for the renewed interest.

“I build my clothes around my watch,” he said. “I’m glad to see people interested in them because maybe now I’ll be able to see them in more storefronts.”

Paulsen, 35, owns 72 pieces, including a $400 limited-edition white Casio G-Shock, a $4,000 Italo Fontana U-boat Flightdeck chronograph, and a $22,000 titanium Panerai PAM 341.

The new trend is present in various labels, including accessible brands such as Timex and Tommy Hilfiger, to luxury brands Rolex and TAG Heuer.

Mary DePrez, national watch buyer for Nordstrom, notes that: “Watches are going through a modern re-emergence, but they have a really rich history that men appreciate.”
